Hook Ocean Regatta Racers Scramble to Cross the Finish at The Landings Marina

One of the region’s premier sailing events returns to The Landings and Skidaway Island in August.

The 8th Annual Hook Ocean Race launches on Saturday, August 26, 2023. Racers will set sail from Calibogue Sound off Hilton Head Island and race toward The Landings Marina. Officials will crown the first boat to arrive as champion.

The race is one of many exciting competitive sporting events The Landings community enjoys each year. The Landings Golf & Athletic Club also hosts the Club Car Championship, the only event on the PGA’s Korn Ferry Tour hosted in the state of Georgia, and the St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger. The annual tennis event offers members the opportunity to view tennis’s rising stars.

Hook sail racers come across the finish line at the marina.

The race returns to The Landings

The Hook Race, so named because the course resembles a fishing hook, offers sailors the opportunity to compete on the open ocean and is the only ocean water sailing event in the Low Country. The Low Country runs along the coast from mid-coast Georgia to North Carolina.

The first racing group will launch from Calibogue Sound off Hilton Head Island at 10 a.m. and then head south past Tybee Island. From there, sailors will cruise up Wassaw Sound where they will cross the finish at Landings Marina on Skidaway Island. The race is expected to take sailors about six hours to reach Wassaw Sound and finish.

Yachts will race in one of three classes: Cruising, Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker. Spinnakers, the large colorful sails extending in front of a sailing vessel, are designed to sail in course wind blowing at 90 degrees to the course and in the same direction as the wind. Post-race celebrations

The race finish is just the beginning. Skidaway Island Boat Club welcomes racers to a Dockside Bar party at Landings Harbor Marina from 3 to 5 p.m. The Chatham Sailing Club will then host an awards dinner at the Landings Harbor picnic grounds after 6 p.m.

The Landings Company is premier sponsor of the race, hosted by the Chatham Sailing Club and the Yacht Club of Hilton Head Island.
