Savannah Challenger Serves Up Excitement for 2025

The Savannah Challenger, the annual premier professional tennis event hosted by The Landings Golf & Athletic Club, returns for its 15th year from April 21-27, 2025.

This tournament, held at the Franklin Creek Tennis Center, attracts a multitude of tennis enthusiasts and spectators from The Landings community and around the entire Low Country region who just want to be where all the action is.

This USTA Pro Circuit Event is part of the worldwide ATP Challenger series, which brings some of the world’s finest tennis players to Savannah. Past contestants include John Isner, Daniel Medvedev, Denis Shapavolov, Nick Kyrgios, Kei Nishikori, Jack Sock, Ryan Harrison and Reilly Opelka to name a few.

“The Savannah Challenger is the longest continuously running professional sporting event in Savannah. This is world class tennis right here in our own backyard,” said Chris Kader, director of Court Sports at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club. “The hospitality our members and patrons bestow upon the players, and the southern charm that we extend, is what makes this tournament so special”.

Key Players to Watch

Each year, the tournament is brimming with notable tennis stars. This year promises to be no different.

Keep an eye on rising stars such as Martin Landaluce, Joao Fonseca, Learner Tien, Gabriel Debru, and Alexander Block, who have been highlighted on the ATP Challenger Tour.

The Challenger series is a worldwide circuit of approximately 150 tournaments located in more than 40 countries. These up-and-coming players gain valuable experience while competing for prize money and world ranking. The number of points each player receives places them in a rank in an order that determines if they get into the Grand Slam.

The week-long tournament hosts a full field of professional singles and doubles players that are recognized globally with rankings ranging from 100-300. Many players will be seeking a wild card into the French open, generating a fantastic competition.

Venue and Fan Experience

The Savannah Challenger is played on outdoor green clay courts, which is less common compared to the red clay or hard courts used in many other Challenger tournaments. This surface provides a distinct challenge for players and prepares them for similar conditions at the French Open.

Another unique attribute is that Club members get an up-close and personal view of tennis’s rising stars.

“We have only three courts here, very close grandstands on all three courts. You can literally reach out and be so close to them,” Tournament Chair Rhegan White-Clemm said. “You can really get the sense of what it goes into and what it needs to be a top-level player.”

All Challenger matches will be live-streamed via the ATP Challenger website which reaches audiences around the world.

If you choose to attend in person, tickets will be available for purchase at the gate on each tournament day for members, guests and fans. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the tournament tend to sell out. To avoid disappointment, it is recommended that you buy your tickets online in advance through the Eventbrite page.

In Honor of 15 Years

In acknowledging the tournament’s 15 years, here are some key milestones and highlights in Savannah Challenger history:

  • 2009: The inaugural tournament saw Michael Russell claim the singles title.
  • 2010: Kei Nishikori, who later became a top-ranked player, won the singles championship.
  • 2014: Nick Kyrgios, another future star, emerged victorious in singles.
  • 2020-2021: The tournament was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 2022: Jack Sock, a well-known American player, won the singles title.

The Savannah Challenger also will continue its partnership with the nonprofit organization, Savannah Area Tennis Association (SATA), to give back to local, underserved children who play tennis in Chatham County.

Tournament Format and Schedule

The schedule includes day matches and night matches, with key events such as the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals spread across the week. Matches begin in the morning and continue into the evening, ensuring fans can enjoy tennis action throughout the day.

The tournament also offers a vibrant atmosphere with concerts and other activities, making it a must-attend event for tennis enthusiasts. See
