How To Choose The Best Pickleball Gear

Pickleball is all the craze globally, as well as here at The Landings. With its increased popularity comes many pickleball gear including pickleball paddles, shoes, rackets, gloves, bags and more.

Whether you’re a seasoned pickleball player (aka pickler) or a new enthusiast, having the right gear, whether for comfort or to enhance your game, and the right accessories can boost your experience and make you look (and maybe play?) like a pro.

Where do you start? Here’s a simple guide to get you on the court and away from the kitchen.

Selecting Pickleball Grips

A good set of paddle grips enhances your control of the paddle. They not only provide comfort but also ensure your grip remains firm throughout the game. Consider these points when selecting new grips:

  • Soft foam ridges and absorbent finish: The soft foam ridges on pickleball grips absorb shock and impact, reducing strain on your hands. Whether you’re hitting powerful shots or engaging in delicate dinks, these grips protect your palms and fingers.
  • Highly sticky surface: A sticky surface ensures your paddle stays securely in your hand. With a better grip, you can confidently execute spin shots, lobs and volleys. The sticky texture also prevents accidental slips, especially during intense rallies.

Most people prefer the sticky grip, but both are changed frequently, especially in the summer heat.

All About the Pickleball Paddle

Pickleball paddles are the heart of the game. Choosing the right one can significantly impact your performance on the court. Here are some things to consider:

  • Playing style matters: Consider your playing style. If finesse and control are your priorities, opt for a lightweight paddle. If power is your game, go for a slightly heavier paddle that can deliver impactful shots.
  • So do materials: Look for options made from:
    • Graphite: Graphite paddles are lightweight, durable and offer excellent control.
    • Composite: Composite paddles combine different materials (like fiberglass and polymer) for a balanced performance.
    • Carbon: A carbon etched face will enhance your ability to create spin and better control your shots.

Selecting Pickleball Balls

Pickleball balls come in various types, and your choice depends on where you play.

  • Outdoor balls: Designed for outdoor courts, they are more durable, with thicker walls to withstand rough surfaces. Look for balls like the Dura Fast 40 or the Franklin X-40 or Oso for outdoor play.
  • Indoor balls: If you play indoors, opt for balls specificially designed for indoor courts. They offer better control and softer bounce. The PCKL Optic Speed balls are a good choice for indoor play.

Remember to check the ball’s approval status with organizations like the USA Pickleball Association to ensure they meet tournament standards.

Slip on the Right Pickleball Shoes

Stability and comfort are key. Investing in proper pickleball shoes is essential for injury prevention and optimal performance. A court shoe that provides lateral stability is the No. 1 priority when selecting a shoe. Each person will have a shoe brand that fits them the best.

Things to consider when purchasing pickleball shoes:

It’s in the Pickleball Bag

Pickleball bags are designed to keep your gear organized and easily accessible. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Compartments: Look for a bag with dedicated compartments for your paddles, balls, and other accessories. Having separate pockets ensures that everything has its place, making it easier to find what you need during a match.
  • Durability: These bags are subjected to lots of wear and tear, especially if you play frequently. Opt for a bag made from durable materials that can withstand the rigors of the court. Reinforced stitching and sturdy zippers are essential.
  • Comfortable straps: Carrying your gear to the court shouldn’t be a hassle. Choose a bag with comfortable straps, whether it’s a backpack-style design or a shoulder strap. Adjustable straps allow you to find the perfect fit for your body.

Ready to Play?

There are a handful of ways to find local pickleball play locations. If you don’t know anyone who plays, then you’ll have to seek out some locations on your own. The USAPA website is a great overall resource to help get you started.

The Landings Golf & Athletic Club, a private residential club in Savannah, Georgia, offers 14 outdoor pickleball courts ready and waiting for members’ playtime. With 8 DecoTurf (a hardcourt constructed from layers of acrylic resin, rubber, silica and other materials on top of an asphalt or concrete base) courts, and 6 concrete courts, all lit for night play.

Never held a pickleball paddle before? That’s OK, too. In fact, the Landing Golf & Athletic Club has nine PPR-certified pickleball instructors on staff who are happy to teach members regardless of their prior experience, athletic ability and fitness level.

Pickleball leagues and clinics are also offered. The Landings Pickleball League, debuting in 2017 with only 80 players, now typically has up to 140 players and plays in spring, summer and fall seasons.
