LWGA Comes Together to Raise Record Amount for Cancer Research
Established in 1974 and with more than 360 members currently, the Landings Women’s Golf Association (LWGA) is proud to be one of the largest, club-based amateur women’s golf organizations in the U.S. LWGA members enjoy playing golf and making a difference in the lives of others, especially those who are fighting cancer.
To support the Anderson Cancer Institute of Memorial Health University Medical Center, which was attracting leading cancer researchers to Savannah, the LWGA established a fundraising tournament, Golf For A Cure. In 2004, when the tournament was founded, funds were raised solely on golfer registration fees.
This well-received tournament would later evolve and expand to become what we now know as Together for a Cure — a Club-wide event that has since raised over $1.1 million for cancer research and patient care right here in Savannah.
Having just completed its nineteenth year, Together for a Cure underwent yet another expansion with the addition of a Family Fun Walk and 5K Run on Skidaway Island. The walk and race are both open to non-Club members.
“What was appealing [about the Family Fun Walk] is … individuals could participate in more than one event — the 5K in the morning, pickleball in the afternoon, and golf a few days later!” said Vicki Marino, Together for a Cure Co-Chair.
This year’s Together for a Cure included 618 participants across all events, 60 volunteers, and raised a record $155,628 for St. Joseph’s/Candler Foundation Nurse Navigator Program and Mercer University School of Medicine. “This fundraiser is an important source of funding for the Mercer University School of Medicine’s Summer Scholar’s Program. It also supports the Nurse Navigator program at St. Joseph’s/Candler, which enables them to identify at-risk lung cancer patients and help reduce the risk of cancer development,” said Lynda Stockslager, Together for a Cure Co-Chair.
Over the past 19 years, innovative medical equipment, a tissue bank providing specimens for research programs, and research stipends to the Mercer University School of Medicine’s Summer Scholars have been made possible by the funds raised at Together for a Cure.
This event takes a lot of time and work to put on, but the passionate committee is happy to take on the task year after year because it is a cause they genuinely believe in. “I have family members and friends who have been affected [by cancer]. Some are survivors, some are unfortunately not. The fact that the money raised stays here in Savannah is very important,” said Stockslager.
As one of the premier private communities in Georgia, The Landings strives to be a generous community that gives back to those in need. We invite everyone to experience the special place that we call home.
