Our Commitment to Conservation

The beauty of The Landings is unmatched. After all, our gorgeous natural setting is home to an abundance of wildlife. Owls, eagles, and countless other bird species grace our skies. And hundreds of plants and animals live throughout our maritime forests and saltwater marshes. From the golf courses to the hiking trails, you never know what kind of amazing wildlife you’ll find on Skidaway Island.

Audubon International

As the first Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community in Georgia, we believe our diversity is worth preserving. Throughout the United States, fewer than 5 percent of golf courses are certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries. But at The Landings, we’re proud to say all six of our courses qualify.

When Earth Day approaches this April, we’ll commit to conservation throughout the entire year. Skidaway Audubon is a not-for-profit organization that raises money for environmental projects across the island. We partner with University researchers, we work to remove invasive species, we implement bird cams and we maintain community gardens. Whatever the project, our focus is always to support and protect our unique island habitats.

Diamondback Terrapin Rescue Project

In 2010, we embarked on a mission to protect the Diamondback Terrapin population — a rare turtle species that thrives in our marshes. However, in the early 1900s, the turtles were harvested to near extinction. But this year, from April until August, our volunteers will search for turtles laying eggs, then protect them until they’re hatched and ready to return to the marsh.

If you see a golf cart or bicycle flying a blue flag with a turtle, you’re seeing one of our dedicated Terrapin volunteers. As a result, we’ve safely released over 15,000 hatchlings since the program began.

Support Skidaway Audubon

Community support is vital to Skidaway Audubon. And the annual golf tournament is in fact our largest source of funding. The 22nd annual Skidaway Audubon Golf Tournament kicks off on Sunday, May 23. Sponsor a hole or register to play in order to continue the initiatives that make The Landings a one-of-a-kind wildlife sanctuary.
