Kiplinger Names Savannah One of the Smartest Places to Retire
With our charming historic downtown area, gorgeous architecture, southern hospitality and amazing cuisine, it’s no wonder Savannah is a top destination for so many people. Turns out it’s also a smart place to retire according to Kiplinger’s new study of 12 Smart Places to Retire.
Savannah was named number 2 Smartest Place to Retire based in part on its proximity to the Savannah College of Art and Design which affords many opportunities to enjoy arts and culture, including the popular Savannah Film Festival. And if you’re looking to further your education there’s good news, because Savannah State University and the Armstrong Campus of Georgia Southern University both offer free tuition for residents age 62 and older. Georgia is also one of Kiplinger’s top 10 tax-friendly states for retirees, thanks to some of the most retiree-friendly tax legislation in the country. Georgia does not tax social security retirement benefits and it allows a generous deduction of $65,000 per person on all types of retirement income for anyone 65 or older. Seniors even qualify for deductions on their property taxes. What’s more, with an average statewide sales tax of 7% and no statewide sales tax on grocery items, retirees have a little more buying power than they might elsewhere.
So if you’re looking for the ideal place to retire, be sure to put Savannah on your list of places to check out. Better yet, schedule a Discovery Visit to The Landings. After all, it’s the smart thing to do.
