Croquet at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club

The Landings Golf & Athletic Club is excited to announce that it now offers croquet among its long list of wonderful amenities. Our Club members are really excited to bring this favorite English pastime to our special community, where we’re always looking for ways to stay active, connect with our neighbors and have fun.

Croquet started in Europe during the mid 1800s, and gained popularity in America around that same time. Later it became an Olympic sport in the 1900 Paris games, and was one of the first outdoor sports to embrace gender equality. By the 1960s croquet caught on seriously in America and was often played on many suburban lawns across the country.

The goal of croquet is to maneuver a colored ball through six wickets, in the correct order and direction, by hitting it with a mallet. Once through the wickets, the ball must then hit a stake in the ground. If a player has hit an opponent’s ball into the stake during the game, he or she is disqualified.

Competitive croquet is often referred to as “chess on grass” — a game of strategy, skill and tactics; however it can also be played leisurely as an afternoon activity with friends. The seriousness of the game is up to the players!

Many celebrities are fans of croquet, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Sean “Diddy” Combs. So we are in good company.

We invite you to join in the fun. Schedule a Discovery Visit, or request Club membership information today. We look forward to seeing you on the lawn!
