Visitors to The Landings are sometimes surprised when the first thing they notice is the landscape. Luxury homes and championship golf courses almost seem to take a back seat to the tree-lined streets, the dense coastal forest, and the magic of the marshes.

That sense of wonder always puts a smile on our faces because it’s the first secret they discover when they take in all that is The Landings. Little do they know that there’s a metaphorical hidden world woven throughout Skidaway Island. One layered with history, ecology, and hidden stories.

We shared a few of those intriguing secrets not too long ago. Here are five more of our favorites.

1. Skidaway’s Mysterious Oyster Shell Mounds

Across Skidaway Island, cedar trees sway in the wind, growing tall from piles of old, bleached oysters and clams. Those shell mounds are most likely middens, or ancient refuse piles, and they are thousands of years old.

Long before winding roads threaded through The Landings’ close-knit neighborhoods, Skidaway Island served as a settlement site for Native American tribes. Indigenous communities, including the Timucua and other coastal peoples, fished the bountiful waterways, collected countless oysters, and left behind shell-filled middens.

It appears these middens were carefully constructed into symmetrical mounds with central chambers intentionally kept clear of debris. What was the purpose? Archaeologists believe they served practical, social, and ceremonial purposes.

Skidaway Island’s mounds likely reflect others found up and down the East Coast. Bonnie Newsom, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Maine and a tribal citizen of the Penobscot Nation, believes the mounds may have served as navigation aids, social boundary markers, resource markers, or multi-purpose landscape features.

Today, shell rings throughout coastal Georgia provide important insight into the Indigenous communities that lived on and shaped the coast long before European settlement.

2. Hidden Freshwater Pockets Encourage Habitation

In many ways, geographically speaking, it’s a wonder The Landings exists at all. At first glance, Skidaway Island shouldn’t be easily habitable. It’s a low coastal island surrounded by saltwater and marshes, where freshwater should be difficult to find.

But Skidaway holds a secret. One that allowed travelers, tribes, and settlers to flourish on the island for thousands of years: its hidden freshwater system.

How does it work? When rainwater filters through the sandy soil, it forms a floating layer of freshwater above the heavier saltwater underground. It’s a delicate natural balancing act called a freshwater lens. Too little rain, excessive development, or saltwater intrusion can disrupt it.

Surviving on the island meant knowing where freshwater collected, where wells could function, which areas remained habitable, and how to live within the island’s environmental limits.

It was the presence of reliable freshwater that made coastal islands like Skidaway suitable for long-term habitation despite their proximity to the ocean.

3. The Landings’ Floating Forest

Depending on the time of day, residents of The Landings who are out for a stroll, walking the dog, or tapering off a long run might see, just for a second, the island’s forest floating above the marshes. It’s a magical moment for those who catch a glimpse.

The magic is all Mother Nature. A trick of the light, so to speak. When cool air and moisture settle low across the marsh surface, they partially obscure the ground and reflect light in unusual ways, which creates the illusion.

Add to that how the island’s maritime forests sit slightly elevated above the surrounding marshland, and the tree line can appear suspended in the mist. At the same time, the lower landscape disappears from view.

4. The Landings is a Birder’s Paradise

Nearly 100 million U.S. adults consider themselves birders, or those who actively observe, identify, and study wild birds in their natural habitats. The Landings is an exceptional place to do so.

Why? Because The Landings sits along the Atlantic Flyway, one of North America’s primary bird migration routes. Each year, millions of birds travel this corridor as they move between northern breeding grounds and southern wintering areas, using coastal habitats like Skidaway Island to rest, feed, and nest.

And with good reason. The Landings was the first Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community in Georgia. Programs like Audubon International’s Certified Sustainable Community and Cooperative Sanctuary designations help preserve the kinds of habitats those birds depend on, including healthy marsh edges, protected tree canopies, native landscaping, water resources, and natural wildlife corridors.

For migratory species traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles, well-managed coastal environments like The Landings can serve as important stopover habitats along the journey.

For birders, it’s a chance to spot a Blackburnian Warbler or the often heard but not seen Scarlet Tanager. Maybe even the elusive Cape May warbler!

5. Skidaway Island’s Hidden Wildlife

There’s more wildlife on Skidaway Island than you’ll likely ever see. And that’s part of what makes the island so remarkable.

Skidaway is a connected network of maritime forests, tidal marshes, freshwater pockets, creeks, mudflats, and estuarine environments, all layered together across the island. That diversity allows wildlife to spread out, move between ecosystems, and often remain hidden even when it’s nearby.

Many species are also naturally elusive or active at different times of day. Deer move quietly through wooded areas at dawn and dusk. Fish, crabs and oysters remain largely unseen beneath the marsh surface and waterline. Even larger animals like otters and raccoons tend to avoid human activity or blend surprisingly well into the landscape.

The result is a living system far larger, richer, and more active than most people realize at first glance.

Curious about our hidden secrets? Come discover them for yourself!

Dinner out with friends always means much more than the meal itself. It’s a chance to catch up, strengthen connections and enjoy a shared experience that feeds both stomach and soul. As humans, we’ve shared meals with friends and family since … Well, since we first gathered in tribes.

And for good reasons. Eating with others can make life more satisfying and build the kind of trust that lets you know your friends have your back. It’s likely why so many of us plan entire trips around food. When choosing where to go, the cuisine often carries just as much weight as the destination itself.

At The Landings Golf & Athletic Club, getting together with friends and family to explore a wide range of dining options is always a culinary adventure. But what kind of adventure?

That’s for you to decide!

The Deck at Franklin Creek

Twosome, Threesome, or foursome? Doesn’t matter. Every golfer worth their putt knows a new day on the back nine is a true adventure. And every golfer knows to start the day with a combination of complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats.

Drop in The Deck at Franklin Creek for a Power Bowl (Greek yogurt, fresh berries, banana, almond butter and pumpkin seeds) and a fresh-brewed coffee. Or, if you prefer, grab some avocado toast or build your own power breakfast sandwich to provide sustained energy throughout the morning.

Arnie’s Tavern at Marshwood

The vibe at Arnie’s Tavern might feel a little Caddyshack, but that’s only because this adventure is all about hanging out and sharing lots of laughs. Grab a chair at the bar with your buddies and order up some classic pub food served with that extra special Landings flair.

Tackle the TLC burger or Tavern Club if the morning round has your stomach growling. If you enjoy a lighter lunch, try Arnie’s Style chicken noodle soup (the secret? Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Noodles) and a classic Caesar salad on the side. Or order up some pub-style chicken wings and fuel up for the afternoon scramble.

Craft Kitchen & Bar at Palmetto

“Fare” warning! But in the best way possible. Craft Kitchen & Bar is less about loading up and more about loosening up. Think shareable plates, lighter bites, and a table that keeps evolving as quickly as the conversation.

Short rib sliders, a twist on a classic Reuben, smoked turkey with fig jam — everything is designed to mix, match, and pass around. It’s the kind of spot where you order one thing… then another…and another!

Heighten the adventure with a beer cocktail. Try the Jealous Moon (Amaro, Fernet-Branca, lemon, bitters, and pale ale) and let us know how many holes you finish before you decide to pack it in and head back to the bar with your squad.

Palmer’s Steakhouse at Marshwood

The popularity of Palmer’s Steakhouse is no mystery, though its timeless, elegant, and stylish atmosphere feels as if it were plucked from a case file of Sherlock Holmes. There’s a certain precision here. Like the perfect round of golf, where every detail has been observed, considered, and placed exactly where it belongs.

Wood-fired steaks, hearty sides, classic cocktails or the Bordeaux of the day. No detail overlooked. And thus the adventure reveals itself in layers. The char of the fire, the balance of seasoning, the quiet harmony between plate and pairing. Like a well-constructed case, each element builds upon the last, guiding you toward an inevitable, delectable conclusion.

Cabana Bar at Marshwood

After an active morning exploring Skidaway Island by bike, boat or elevated boardwalk, unwind at the Cabana Bar at Marshwood. The vibe is total vacation immersion (maybe even a little bright and breezy like Pirates of the Caribbean), so don’t shy away from a colorful cocktail paired with tasty firecracker shrimp.

Try the portabella tacos or a delicious grilled chicken club, and then find a lounge chair to linger a while. Maybe jump in the pool between blackberry fizzes and coconut lemon spritzers.

Osteria Oakridge

If your friend group hangs like Danny Ocean and his Ocean’s 11 crew, full of fun, loaded with charisma, and maybe up to something, make your way to Osteria Oakridge. The atmosphere is warm, vibrant, and just a little transportive. Sort of like stepping into a Tuscan evening without ever leaving the island.

Order the lemon- and caper-scented flounder and Faroe Island salmon, then share bites. Cap the night with a bottle of Pieropan Soave Classico and scoop gelato for dessert.

Deer Creek A Coastal Grill

If you’re in the mood, Deer Creek A Coastal Grill provides an oceanside vibe that feels like a celebration. With a nautical interior and gorgeous covered patio, seafood is fresh and local, with many items coming from local farms and companies within 50 miles of the Club.

Bond over Bull River oysters or the colossal shrimp cocktail, and then indulge in your very own Georgia clam bake. Try the grilled CAB filet mignon or the broiled 9-ounce lobster tail. Then sit back and watch the sunset gently fall into the ocean.

109th Hole

A day with the kids can feel a bit Adventures in Babysitting. Slightly crazed, a bit confusing, but laughs all along the way. Settle things down while keeping everyone engaged by grabbing lunch at the 109th Hole, where 13 screens keep the action going and the menu delivers all the classics: burgers, wings, and French fries galore.

It’s casual, lively and built for families who want to relax without worrying about keeping everyone entertained.

Finjin Sushi & Noodle Bar

Wrap up your adventure with something a little different at Finjin Sushi & Noodle Bar.

For your daring teen who wants to try everything, there’s beautifully prepared sushi. Younger siblings who might not be as culinarily brave will enjoy ramen and noodle dishes with a familiar twist.

It’s just the right mix of new and approachable, and just cool enough to keep teens interested. A perfect way to end the day with everyone satisfied.

Before sustainability was a buzzword, there was Hideo Sasaki.

Sasaki, a world-renowned landscape architect and integrated design pioneer, approached community planning differently, designing buildings, roads, and amenities to work with the natural landscape, not against it. He believed man-made objects should fit into existing features like forests, waterways, and terrain rather than reshape them.

“As the world becomes more crowded and resources limited,” Sasaki is quoted as saying, “we must treasure the oases we find and create new ones, no matter how small, with love and care.”

At its core, Sasaki idea was simple. Healthier, more livable communities depended on their connection to nature. Today we know that to be true, but it was a radical philosophy for its time.

His projects focused on protecting nature and making it part of daily life. We can see that in his master plan for The Landings. His design for our community emphasizes roads that follow the natural shape of the land, homes that blend into the maritime forest, and thoughtful elements that preserve green space and coastal ecology.

It’s why The Landings feels less like a traditional development and more like an extension of the island itself.

Why Access to Nature Matters More Than Ever

Sasaki was on to something when he called green spaces in his designs “oases.” Because what’s an oasis, other than a place to rest, recover, and feel like yourself again?

It’s no surprise that spending time in nature reduces stress, supports healthy blood pressure, strengthens immune function, and more. Research also shows that time in natural environments can reduce anxiety, combat depression, improve cognitive function, and support greater emotional stability.

The trick isn’t understanding the benefits, though. It’s making time for them. Thankfully, Sasaki’s design makes that part easy for residents of The Landings. From green spaces like forests and parks to blue spaces like marshes and waterways, this connection to nature isn’t incidental. It is built into the landscape itself, shaping the community’s lifestyle, values, and enduring appeal.

The Landings 5 Natural Landscapes

One of the things that makes life at The Landings so special is the variety of natural landscapes residents can enjoy every day, from open marshes to shaded forests to winding waterways.

1. Coastal Marshlands & Tidal Systems

The expansive salt marshes that surround Skidaway Island form the outer edge of The Landings’ natural foundation. Defined by tidal creeks and constantly shifting water levels, this living system shapes both the ecology and residents’ experience. You’ll find residents taking long, leisurely walks, watching the tide shift and enjoying the comings and goings of birds, crabs, and other wildlife.

2. Maritime Forest

Inland, the marsh gives way to a dense maritime forest that forms the core of the island’s natural structure. Towering oaks draped in Spanish moss, along with pines and mixed hardwoods, create shaded, enclosed environments.

Spanning thousands of preserved acres, this is where residents make their way through The Landings, enjoying more than 30 miles of shaded trails connecting neighborhoods and social hangouts.

3. Rivers, Waterways & Intracoastal Access

Beyond the marsh, larger waterways like the Wilmington River and access to the Intracoastal Waterway extend the community’s connection to the broader coastal environment.

This is the natural gateway to boating, fishing and exploration.

4. Lagoons & Interior Water Features

Closer to home, an extensive network of lagoons creates a more intimate layer within the island’s water system. Integrated into golf courses and residential views, these lagoons reflect and extend the surrounding environment while supporting drainage and ecological balance. Lagoons are integrated throughout neighborhoods and are designed to enhance residents’ quality of life and further connect everyone to the world around them.

5. Wildlife & Biodiversity

Woven throughout both the marsh and forest layers is a rich wildlife ecosystem. Egrets, herons, and migratory birds move through the tidal systems, while deer, fiddler crabs and other species inhabit the forest and marsh edges.

Designated areas like the Rookery preserve these habitats, but wildlife is not confined to them. It is part of everyday life, visible along trails, waterways and neighborhoods, reinforcing the sense that the community exists with nature.

How to Experience The Landings Connection to Nature

These elements make the natural landscape not just something residents see, but something they live within every day. At The Landings, that connection to nature is not incidental. It is designed, preserved and experienced as part of daily life.

Want to experience that connection? Schedule your Discovery Visit and come see for yourself.

The greens are rolling at a 12+ on the stimpeter, the bunkers raked, and the pins strategically placed. The surrounding 300-plus well-appointed homes lining the acclaimed Deer Creek Course at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club are gleaming in all their southern charm.

All these signs of spring can only point to one thing: It’s time for the ninth annual Club Car Championship, a Korn Ferry Tour Event, to tee off at The Landings. Part of the Korn Ferry Tour Schedule and drawing thousands of spectators, in addition to being televised this year on the Golf Channel, the tournament is the perfect opportunity to showcase golf course living at its finest.

What’s so great about living on the golf course that hosts the Club Car Championship?

Privacy and prime views — Imagine waking up to lush, manicured greens right outside your window. Golf courses are renowned for their scenic beauty, and the Deer Creek Course is no exception. As you sip your morning coffee, the rolling fairways and vibrant foliage create a serene backdrop. And don’t be surprised if you spot some unique inhabitants—birds, turtles, deer and perhaps even a glimpse of a fox or river otter. Golf course living offers a front-row seat to nature’s splendor, and a spectator’s dream spot for viewing the championship tournament.

Great place to raise a family — Georgia’s gated golf communities provide an ideal environment for families. At The Landings, kids can participate in a wide range of activities beyond golf. But there’s something magical about golf. The lessons learned on the fairways—patience, discipline, and camaraderie—shape not only a happy childhood but also a healthy adulthood. In addition, during the Club Car Championship, the annual First Tee Career Day, presented by Memorial Health Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah, will welcome members of First Tee – Savannah for a look behind the scenes at a professional golf tournament. Members get the chance to explore the many career opportunities available in the golf and club management industries. Participants will experience a clubhouse tour and pastry-making session, a tournament gardening demonstration with hands-on floral installation and more. Attendance for the First Tee Career Day is available by invitation only.

Amenities — Golf courses sometimes offer special course membership rates to homeowners in the community. Private residential communities, such as The Landings, also often have other amenities such as tennis, pickleball, swimming pools and clubhouses. This often means community events and get-togethers throughout the year. These social events can help you get to know your neighbors – an added benefit if you’re new to the area. One of the highlighted special events each year includes the annual Club Car Championship. Each Landings Golf & Athletic Club member receives two free tickets per day, Thursday through Sunday. They can purchase additional tickets for $10. Tickets for Saturday, however, are $20 and include a Yacht Rock Revue concert, back for a second year.

What sets Deer Creek Course apart from the rest?

Set against a stunning backdrop of stately hardwood forests, unspoiled saltwater marshes and pristine tidal creeks, all six golf courses at The Landings are designated as “Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries” by Audubon International, offering challenging play for golfers of all skill levels.

Deer Creek, host course for the Club Car Championship and the next wave of PGA TOUR stars, was originally built by Tom Fazio in 1991, with the famed architect returning in 2009 to modernize the course via an expansive restoration.

Relatively wide fairways along this course offer solace to golfers who need extra room, but the par threes are the toughest on the island. This course will test golfers of every skill level, making it perfect for the CCC. The 18th green is directly behind the Deer Creek Clubhouse offering diners and spectators alike a wonderful view of championship play.

“This is an amazing opportunity to welcome a national and international audience to the drama of the Club Car Championship, the beauty of Savannah, and the golf cart lifestyle at one of the country’s premier residential communities,” said Club Car President Mark Wagner.

Club Car Championship, a Korn Ferry Tour Event

The Club Car Championship runs March 23-29. The tournament is a four-day, 72-hole, stroke-play competition with a total purse of $1 million. The Korn Ferry Tour is the primary path to the PGA TOUR, awarding 30 PGA TOUR cards per season. This tournament is one of only three regular-season events on the Korn Ferry Tour to be broadcast on network television.

The Landings Golf & Athletic Club will offer complimentary admission to all United States Armed Forces (Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve, and Retirees), Veterans, and First Responders with a valid ID.

Daily and weekly general admission tickets for the Club Car Championship are on sale here. For more information including the tournament schedule, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, and more, visit the tournament’s website.

Many people at some point dream of trading the rat race of city life — or the predictable sameness of suburbia — for something different. After all, what suburb doesn’t have the same coffee chain, the same boutique fitness studio, the same crowded public golf course?

The appeal of a coastal community is obvious. A temperate climate. Morning walks along the water. An active outdoor lifestyle. Fresh seafood at a tucked-away grill one night, white-tablecloth elegance the next. It almost feels like resort living every day.

But “most people” aren’t the ones shaping truly exceptional communities.

Savvy buyers are looking for something deeper. Yes, they want the shoreline’s beauty. But more than that, they want stability and security. They search for a place where relationships endure and investments hold their value.

For them, the waterfront is simply the backdrop. The true luxury is peace of mind.

Communities like The Landings illustrate this distinction. Just minutes from historic Savannah yet distinctly set apart, it offers coastal beauty paired with long-term stewardship and planning.

The 6 qualities discerning buyers consistently look for

What separates an ordinary coastal destination from a truly exclusive community? And what are savvy buyers searching for? It starts with:

1. A prime location

Scenic surroundings are often expected, but discerning buyers understand that not all natural settings are created equal.

Many want preserved green space, moss-draped oaks, and thoughtfully designed landscapes, but savvy buyers place a higher value on their “location within the location.”

That’s what experts call micro-positioning a home within an already desirable community. It’s the exact placement of the property and how that placement captures light, frames lush outdoor experiences, minimizes disruption, and protects long-term value.

In short, prime location isn’t just about proximity to natural beauty. It’s about privacy, protection and preserving the view for years to come.

2. Privacy, security and exclusivity

It won’t surprise you to learn that discerning buyers notice the details, especially when it comes to security. And at this level, security is less about restriction and more about reassurance.

In other words, security is the detail. When a community is designed with care, residents can feel confident that their surroundings support them.

That means visible, well-trained security staff, thoughtfully designed entry points, and lighting that enhances both beauty and peace of mind without feeling intrusive.

With 24-hour staffed gate access and carefully managed entry points, The Landings offers a seamless layer of protection that feels natural and unobtrusive—so residents can spend their time enjoying everything the community has to offer.

3. Resort-caliber amenities and lifestyle

For most people, time is the rarest commodity. That’s why the right amenities matter to discerning buyers. A championship-caliber golf course or a serious yacht club carries weight because it reflects commitment, not novelty.

The same is true for professionally managed tennis and pickleball programs, fitness facilities that feel like a private club rather than a hotel gym, and on-site dining that is genuinely worthy of hosting friends and colleagues.

For the savvy searcher, the goal is not activity for activity’s sake. It is seamless access to the experiences that contribute to their quality of life.

The Landings exemplifies this balance, offering multiple championship golf courses, two full-service marinas, racquet sports programs, a fitness center and dining venues that feel curated rather than crowded.

4. Proximity to essential lifestyle services

As priorities evolve, access carries a different kind of weight.

Proximity to high-quality medical facilities provides reassurance without intruding on daily life. Efficient access to private or commercial airports supports mobility and business continuity. Strong local governance and municipal stability indicate long-term stewardship. Fine dining and upscale retail within easy reach add polish without requiring effort.

At this stage, comfort and reliability replace novelty. The right location supports life quietly, without demanding it revolve around logistics.

When you live at The Landings, you enjoy convenient access to Savannah’s renowned medical centers, cultural institutions, award-winning restaurants, boutique shopping and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

The island feels removed, yet everything essential remains within easy reach.

5. Strong investment potential

Your home is your home. It’s where you feel safe, comfortable and create memories with friends and family. But savvy buyers know it’s also a financial decision. Buyers at this level analyze long-term stability with the same care they give to architecture.

They study historical resale performance, market resilience during downturns and the enduring desirability of the location. They evaluate the tax environment and ownership structure with a strategic lens. In short, they’re looking for stability.

That is why established communities with decades of thoughtful planning and controlled growth tend to stand apart. In places like The Landings, where development has been measured and demand within the Savannah coastal market has remained consistent, buyers find the kind of stability that supports both lifestyle and long-term value.

6. Financial stability of the community

This is the variable many buyers overlook. Experienced ones do not.

The community’s financial health matters. Strong HOA reserves, disciplined infrastructure maintenance and thoughtful capital planning signal responsible leadership.

Controlled inventory and measured development protect property values. Clear restrictions that prevent disruptive short-term rentals preserve the character of the neighborhood.

At this level, purchasing a home is also entering a carefully managed micro-economy. Its governance, reserves and long-term vision will shape the experience for years to come. The closing is not the finish line. It is the beginning of stewardship.

The Landings’ long-standing governance structure and emphasis on preserving community standards reinforce the stability discerning buyers expect in a legacy coastal community.

Discover a place where beauty meets peace of mind

In the end, a truly exclusive coastal community is about more than beautiful views. It’s about stability, thoughtful planning and the confidence that your home will support your lifestyle today and hold its value tomorrow.

For discerning buyers, lush landscapes and world class amenties may be the setting, but investing in quality of life is the real luxury. Communities like The Landings bring those elements together in a way that feels both refined and enduring.

Plan a Discovery Visit to experience all The Landings has to offer.

Much has been written about the physical and mental health benefits of golf. Mike Harris, editor of Golf Monthly, wrote about the way golf played a critical role in his efforts to overcome depression and anxiety, for example. And playing both the front and back nine in a single round can be more beneficial to your heart health than a brisk walk, according to researchers.

We even tackled the topic not long ago, explaining how golf can:

Improve cardiovascular health

Bolster strength and flexibility

Reduce stress

Provide mental clarity

Encourage mindfulness

And more

But researchers have discovered something even more powerful for our overall health. And golf may be one of the best ways to unlock it.

Growing importance of social engagement

It should come as no surprise that we’re social creatures. Whether we’re introverts, extroverts or somewhere in between, we tend to find pleasure when we’re around other people. The caveat, of course, is that they’re people we choose to be around.

It turns out social connection is not a “nice-to-have,” but a biological necessity. Science backs this up. Neuroscientists have identified dedicated brain networks, often called the “social brain,” that evolved specifically to manage relationships, for example. And public health researchers now classify social connection as a major determinant of health, alongside diet and physical activity.

When we’re isolated for extended periods, that isolation triggers increases in cortisol levels, inflammation markers, and cardiovascular strain. Social isolation even rivals smoking and obesity as a risk factor for early mortality.

Loneliness is a danger, the body tells us, which motivates us to join groups and build bonds with others. When we do, the benefits are striking.

Social engagement enhances our ability to manage stress, anxiety and depression, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Socializing even helps us live longer by reducing the risk of chronic disease and illness, including heart disease, stroke and dementia.

But there’s a catch.

Is golf healthy? It’s all about quality over quantity

To reap the health benefits of social engagement, you must do it thoughtfully.

It’s not enough to surround yourself with other people. Superficial interactions don’t provide the same benefit as repeated, emotionally supportive connections. Duration and repetition matter. In other words, quality matters more than quantity.

Nurture quality relationships by:

Setting a regular gathering time. Doing so reinforces familiarity. The more you get to know someone, the more comfortable you are engaging with them. Stronger friendships are built through consistency.

Spending extended time together. Research shows four or five hours is the sweet spot, but any extended time will work. This allows small talk to evolve into a deeper conversation, which in turn builds trust and strengthens bonds.

Doing the same activity together. Researchers call it “predictable rituals,” like a Friday poker game or one of the many social groups offered at The Landings. Shared activities create a sense of belonging and support.

Over time, these connections reshape neural pathways involved in emotional control, making people more resilient to stress, better able to regulate mood, and less vulnerable to anxiety and depression.

Another reason why golf is the perfect sport

All that said, there may be no greater activity to nurture social engagement than golf. Running, cycling, and even working out at the gym can be isolating and headphone-driven.

Even compared to team sports, which tend to involve short bursts of interaction and can become age-limited over time, golf encourages conversation, cooperation, and connection over several hours, creating space for deeper social bonds to form.

Plus, golf is built around sustained, shared time. A foursome typically takes 4 to 5 hours to shoot 18 holes. And while golf can be anything but predictable, playing regularly with the same group puts you well on your way to even greater physical, mental and social health.

How to reap the benefits if you’re a golfer

It takes a little work to turn your regular game into a social one. The benefits of playing golf don’t happen by accident. Here’s how to make social engagement an intentional part of your time on the course:

Form a consistent group. Regular playing partners foster trust and connection, turning weekly rounds into a reliable social anchor.

Cart or walk together. Sharing a cart or walking side by side encourages conversation and presence, transforming the round from parallel play into genuine connection.

Become a golf club member: Occasional or non-member players miss the consistency that a deep connection requires. Active membership creates repeated, meaningful social interaction through leagues, events, and shared routines.

Join an association. Associations create consistency and shared rituals, allowing relationships to deepen through regular play and familiar faces. The Landings Golf & Athletic Club is home to four golf associations — The Landings Men’s Golf Association, The Landings Women’s Golf Association, Ladies 9 Hole Golf Association, and The Landings Couples Golf Association.

How to reap the benefits if you’ve never picked up a club

The answer here is simple: become a golfer. It’s not as daunting as it sounds. Plus, you’re in good company. More than 3.3 million people play the game for the first time each year. Here’s how to join the game:

Start lessons in the off-season. If you want to accelerate your training, find a good coach or golf pro and take some lessons. The best time to do so is in the off-season, which is typically fall. This lets you build skills without pressure.

Practice during quieter times. Avid golfers will likely tell you there are no off-hours for dedicated players, but weekday mornings and late afternoons are usually less busy. Down time lets you take more time to hone your game.

Be consistent and be patient. It takes both to learn the game. You’ll likely spend the first six months learning the basics, according to Snyder Golf USA, and another six before you see consistency in your game. Confidence can take years. That’s why consistency is so important.

Have the right mindset. Golf is a sport you can play throughout your life, and, as we’ve learned, the physical, mental, and social benefits are great. Wanting to play it for a lifetime, however, means focusing on your progress and always having fun.

Newcomers might have the best advantage when it comes to social engagement. Finding a foursome with similar skills and sticking together builds connection through shared progress, challenges, and plenty of sand traps.

Bonus points for older players

As a bonus for older players, golf offers something especially valuable: a built-in sense of connection and belonging. Research consistently shows staying socially engaged later in life supports longer lifespans and sharper cognitive function, and golf naturally brings people together. These interactions help keep the mind active, reduce stress, and add meaningful enjoyment to everyday life.

Golf club membership enhances this benefit by creating a social network for seniors with other active, like-minded peers who value staying engaged and healthy. The result is more than a game. It’s a welcoming community that supports mental sharpness, emotional well-being, and a fuller, more vibrant approach to aging.

Join the Club and start today

Golf may be one of the last places where movement, nature, and human connection still come together. There’s never been a better time to experience it for yourself. The Landings Golf & Athletic Club is the heart of The Landings lifestyle, with a membership made up primarily of residents. If you’re not already living here, a Discovery Visit offers the perfect introduction to both the Club and the community.

As a member, you’ll enjoy unlimited access to each of our six championship golf courses, designed by luminaries like Arnold Palmer, Tom Fazio, Arthur Hills and Willard C. Byrd, all within a golf cart ride away.

The holidays are a special time at The Landings—full of parties, friends, family, and festive fun. Among all the season’s traditions, the Angel Tree remains one of the most meaningful. The tree is up, the angels are hung, and once again our community is rallying to brighten the holidays for children served by CASA and the MARNE/HAAF Military Families Toy Drive—a tradition our residents have generously supported for 27 years.

Each year, The Landings partners with Savannah organizations that provide toys and gifts to families in need. Two Christmas trees are set up in the Company’s Welcome Center and decorated with hundreds of angel tags, each representing the holiday wish list of a child—from newborns to teens. Residents stop by, select an angel, and shop for the gifts that will make that child’s holiday special.

This year’s beneficiaries are the MARNE/HAAF Toy Drive, which supports local military families, and CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates), which serves children in foster care throughout Savannah.

Our partners—and The Landings Real Estate Company’s agents—are continually moved by the extraordinary generosity of this community. We hope these gifts bring joy, comfort, and a little holiday magic to the children and families they serve. Now through December 12, residents may visit the TLREC office to choose an angel and pick up that child’s wish list. Gifts should be new and unwrapped, with the angel card attached.

Whether you select a single item or several, every contribution brings joy and dignity to a child who needs it most. Thank you in advance for your kindness, generosity, and the spirit that makes The Landings such a caring community.

Imagine waking up to the sound of rustling palms, the scent of salt air and the golden glow of a Georgia sunrise. At The Landings on Skidaway Island, this isn’t just a vacation, it’s a lifestyle.

Nestled just 20 minutes from historic downtown Savannah, The Landings is a private, gated community that blends coastal sophistication with Southern charm, making it a dream destination for seasonal or second homeowners.

With approximately 15 million American households owning a second home as of 2025, it’s no surprise that many choose warmer climates like Florida, California, Arizona and increasingly Georgia.

For those seeking a serene second-home retreat and a luxury-gated community, The Landings offers everything you need.

Where Winter Feels Like Spring

The Landings enjoys a mild, coastal climate that makes winter feel like spring. While northern states are braced for snow and ice, Skidaway Island offers sunny skies, gentle breezes, and temperatures that invite you outdoors year-round.

Whether you’re strolling under moss-draped oaks, playing pickleball or teeing off on one of our six championship golf courses, the weather is always on your side.

Accessibility is another advantage. Located near Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and major highways, The Landings makes second-home transitions seamless. Whether you’re driving down from the Northeast or flying in from the Midwest, getting to your second home is easy and stress-free.

Familiar and Comfortable

There’s something deeply comforting about returning to the same place each season, another home that reflects your style and a community that knows your name.

At The Landings, second-home owners enjoy the luxury of familiarity with the excitement of discovery. While most of our residents consider The Landings their primary residence, there are some who view The Landings as their second or seasonal home.

With seven distinct neighborhoods across 6,300 acres, each offering unique views and amenities, you’ll find a home that suits your preferences. From marsh-front estates to cozy cottages near the marina, every residence is part of a larger tapestry of community and comfort.

Seasonal residents often speak about the fun of reconnecting with neighbors, rejoining clubs and settling into a rhythm that feels both invigorating and grounding.

Lifestyle: Wellness, Connection and Leisure

For second-home owners, The Landings offers a sanctuary where wellness, connection and leisure come together in perfect harmony. Here’s why:

Golf: Six 18-hole private championship Georgia golf courses are available only to members of The Landings Golf & Athletic Club, each one designed by such masters as Arnold Palmer, Tom Fazio, Arthur Hills and Willard C. Byrd.

Set against a stunning backdrop of stately hardwood forests, unspoiled saltwater marshes and pristine tidal creeks, all six golf courses near Savannah, Ga., are designated as “Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries” by Audubon International, offering challenging play for golfers of all skill levels – all within one cart ride. In addition, the newly renovated Oakridge course just reopened to members this fall.

Boating: There is no better way to take advantage of all The Landings has to offer than to set sail from either of our two full-service, deepwater marinas. Both offer access to the Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway, perfect for heading out for a fishing trip, a Sunday cruise, or a trip to a surrounding island.

Trails & Nature: More than 30 miles of walking, biking, and jogging trails wind through lush green spaces and scenic waterways. There’s even a park for your pooch.

Social Clubs: With 100+ social clubs, from photography to pickleball, there’s always something to do and someone to meet. In addition, there’s a robust community garden if digging in the dirt is your passion.

Warmer climates like Georgia promote active living, which has been linked to improved physical and mental health. Whether you’re kayaking through tidal creeks or attending a wine tasting at the clubhouse, every day offers opportunities to thrive.

Year-Round Amenities & Services

Unlike some seasonal communities that quiet down in winter, The Landings stays vibrant year-round. Its world-class amenities ensure that every month, whether in January or July, is filled with community and excitement.

Pickleball isn’t just a trend, it’s a movement. And at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club, we’re proud to be leading the charge. What began as a fun, fast-paced court sport has evolved into one of the most powerful social engines in our community. Pickleball at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club is more than a game, it’s a way for members to connect, compete and celebrate life together.

With more than 700 active pickleball players and a league that’s grown nearly tenfold since its 2017 debut, it’s clear: Pickleball is a cornerstone of community life at Franklin Creek. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce the Franklin Creek Campus Expansion Project: a year-long, nearly $6 million investment designed to elevate the pickleball experience and enrich the social fabric of our Club with a new pavilion.

Expansion Highlights

This ambitious project is designed with one goal in mind: to meet the growing demand for pickleball in Savannah, Ga., while enhancing the overall member experience at Franklin Creek campus. Here’s what we will deliver:

Parking Improvements

One of the first steps in the expansion is addressing the growing need for parking. Franklin Creek is the most visited property in The Landings, and parking has become a challenge during peak hours and major events. The expansion is adding 72 car spots and 33 golf cart spots — a 50% increase in capacity. This improvement not only alleviates congestion but also enhances traffic flow and safety throughout the campus. Members and guests will soon enjoy easier access to all amenities, from courts to pools to dining.

Pickleball Court Expansion

The heart of the project is the dramatic expansion and upgrade of our pickleball facilities. We are increasing our court inventory from 15 to 22, giving players more opportunities to play, practice and compete. All courts will be resurfaced with DecoTurf, replacing the previous mix of concrete and other materials that led to inconsistent play and maintenance issues.

Six original courts will be replaced with 10 brand-new regulation pickleball courts, each equipped with lighting for evening play. The former Hitting Wall is transforming into four additional lighted courts, maximizing space and utility. We will maintain at least eight playable courts throughout construction to ensure members can continue enjoying the sport without interruption.

Pavilion & Social Space

Pickleball is as much about connection as competition, and our new pavilion will reflect that philosophy. This covered social space will include a bar and a “finishing” kitchen, designed for simplicity and speed, offering drinks and light fare for players and spectators alike. The pavilion also will serve as a central check-in point for access control, enhancing security and streamlining operations.

We also are going to add a small pro shop and upgraded restrooms to improve convenience and comfort. The pavilion will be more than a structure; it will be a social hub where friendships are forged, stories are shared and the spirit of The Landings comes alive.

Why Franklin Creek?

Franklin Creek is the heartbeat of The Landings Golf & Athletics Club. With tennis courts, bocce courts, pools and The Deck restaurant drawing crowds year-round, it’s already our most visited property. But pickleball has added a new layer of energy and excitement, transforming Franklin Creek into a true community destination.

Members voiced their passion for the game and their desire for more courts, better facilities and a space that reflects the quality and camaraderie of our Club. Some courts were in disrepair due to incompatible concrete surfaces, and peak-hour demand often exceeded capacity. It was time to fix what we had and build what we need.

The expansion is about honoring the spirit of our members. Their enthusiasm and feedback shapes every decision, from court surfaces to pavilion amenities. Franklin Creek soon will be a place where sport and social life intersect seamlessly.

Franklin Creek Amenities Snapshot

Franklin Creek offers a diverse array of amenities that make it a central hub for recreation and relaxation:

19 Tennis Courts — 11 lighted for night play, catering to both casual and competitive players.

22 Pickleball Courts — expanded and upgraded for optimal play.

8 Bocce Courts — ideal for laid-back games and social gatherings.

The Deck at Franklin Creek — a casual, come-as-you-are restaurant and cabana bar, perfect for post-game meals or poolside refreshments.

Franklin Creek Pool — family friendly with a zero-entry shallow end, slides and a splash pad featuring a pirate ship water feature.

Athletic Fields — versatile spaces for soccer, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, and more.

Pickleball Pavilion – Fast casual restaurant

These amenities make Franklin Creek a destination for all ages and interests, and the pickleball expansion will enhance its role as a vibrant community center.

Why a Pavilion?

Pickleball is more than a sport, it’s a social experience. With up to 60 players on the courts and just as many watching or waiting, the need for a dedicated gathering space was clear. The pavilion will be designed to be a Deck “Outpost,” offering a casual venue with drinks, snacks and a welcoming atmosphere.

The bar will provide full beverage service, while the finishing kitchen will deliver a limited but satisfying menu. It’s about speed and simplicity, allowing members to grab a bite without leaving the action. Whether you’re cooling off after a match or catching up with friends, the pavilion will be the perfect place to relax and recharge.

We listened to our members, and they told us this was an essential part of the overall experience. The pavilion won’t be just about convenience, but about community. It’s a place where connections will happen, laughter echoes and memories are made.

Member-Driven, Expert-Led

From the very beginning, this project has been powered by our members. The Capital Projects Committee, led by Chair Tom Souls, is working hand-in-hand with staff and trusted partners like The Coleman Company, architect Howard Kuo, and land planner Todd Theodore of Wood and Partners.

Their mission? To deliver a best-in-class experience that balances quality, cost and care. Every detail, from the layout of the courts to the design of the pavilion, is being shaped by member input. This isn’t just a renovation; it is a shared vision coming to life.

Pickleball Culture at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club

Pickleball at Franklin Creek is more than a sport — it’s a lifestyle. Weekly clinics, lessons and group play welcome newcomers and seasoned players alike. Tuesday nights are electric with league play, drawing crowds and creating memories. Whether you’re competing or cheering from the sidelines, there’s a place for everyone.

The community spirit is palpable. Players greet each other by name, share tips and encouragement and celebrate each other’s victories. It’s not uncommon to see families gathered, friends reconnecting and new members being welcomed with open arms.

With this expansion, we’re building more than just courts, we’re building community. This is a 20+ year investment in the future of Franklin Creek and the future of pickleball at The Landings.

Serving Up the Future

The Franklin Creek Expansion Project is more than a renovation, it’s a reimagination of what pickleball and community life can be. We’re proud to serve up the future, one court, one connection and one celebration at a time.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or just discovering the joy of pickleball, Franklin Creek will be ready to welcome you. Come connect and be part of something extraordinary.
